What is power steering in a vehicle?

Power steering solved a common problem:  the need to exert excessive force on the steering wheel to achieve the desired turn. This provides safety and peace of mind for the driver, as it is easier to react to obstacles on the road. To take work off the driver, the power steering works using a circuit that is activated when you turn the steering wheel (as long as the engine is running). The internal components of the course generate extra force with the help of the circulation of liquid fluid (oil), which serves to create pressure:

As more oil arrives, the pressure in the cylinder increases until the inner piston fires; the movement of the piston causes the wheels to roll (in this hypothetical case, to the left).

Although power steering and hydraulic steering are often referred to as different mechanisms,  hydraulic steering is a type of power steering. The correct thing would be to speak of hydraulic power steering since its classification by  type of drive is:

  • Hydraulic power steering
  • Electro-hydraulic power steering
  • Electric power steering

What is hydraulic power steering?

Both hydraulic and electro-hydraulic steering uses an internal pump that connects to the engine and sends fluid through tubes and hoses to the steering box. Its standard components are the hydraulic fluid or oil reservoir, the steering pump, the master cylinder, the control valve, and the cooler. So is there a difference between power and hydraulic steering?

Starting from power steering in a vehicle, it is clear that the difference between power steering and hydraulic is not exactly a matter of operation. Both are intended to reduce physical effort from the driver, and for this, they use internal auxiliary systems that are activated when you move the steering wheel.

  • In the power steering, a circuit is activated that facilitates the movement of mechanical elements, such as the car’s wheels, to simplify the move. Hydraulic steering also requires the driver to exert some force to actuate, but this is much less, and there may even be those who feel that the vehicle is driving almost alone.
  • The hydraulic driving experience involves much less effort when manipulating the steering wheel; the driver must apply a minimum force to maneuver. And there is also greater control of the vehicle at high speeds, but it requires more effort when driving at less than 15 km / h or parking.
