last fall, Ducati unveiled nine new models in a series of “world premiere” online events. That’s an impressive list of new models, but it seems Ducati isn’t done yet, with the announcement of three more presentations to follow, on February 17, March 3 and March 10.
Ducati hasn’t hinted at what to expect from the three world premieres, or even how many models will be part of each episode. motorcycles.com we can confirm that two of the models will be new Panigale V4 R and a Panigale V4 SP2† The proof comes from Ducati itself, or more specifically from the user manual download page on the official Ducati website. While the manuals themselves are not available, the drop-down menus contain options for a 2022 Panigale V4 R and a 2022 Panigale V4 SP.
The Panigale V4 R is a full series production model with a 998cc version of the Desmosedici Stradale engine, making it eligible for superbike racing classes. It was last offered as a 2020 model and is still eligible to compete in World Superbike but is due for an update.
We haven’t been able to verify any details on a new V4 R, but we do expect some updates along the lines of what Ducati is releasing. 2022 Panigale V4 and V4 S† This will likely include new bodywork, reshaped airfoils and possibly engine upgrades. An updated gearbox may also be in the works, and there is speculation online that Ducati may be switching to a double-sided swingarm.
We have more information on a Panigale V4 SP2. The Panigale V4 SP, if you remember, it was a numbered production model based on the V4 S and had inherited features from the Superleggera V4, such as the carbon fiber wheels, dry clutch and upgraded Brembo brakes. SP2 will include some of those updates, in addition to the recent updates from V4 S.
The Ducati Motorcycle Panigale V4 SP can be followed by a V4 SP2 model.
For more evidence, a comparison spec sheet of the Panigale V2 and V4 models at: Ducati Austria website it was recently updated to replace the “V4 SP” with the “V4 SP2”. We know these specs are for 2022 because the recent update increased the claimed power of the Panigale V4 to 215.5 horsepower from the previous 214 horsepower.
The full spec sheet seems to verify other details specific to the V4 SP2, such as Brembo Stylema R calipers, a dry clutch, carbon wheels, an adjustable Öhlins steering damper and numerous carbon components.
As for the name, the Panigale V4 SP2 follows the pattern of the Ducati 851, which saw a similar nomenclature for its SP (Sport Performance) models. In 1990, Ducati followed the 851 SP with an 851 SP2 (which introduced an increase in displacement from 851 cc to 888 cc).
The 2022 Panigale V4 R and V4 SP2 will feature at least one, if not two, of Ducati’s world premiere episodes. We suspect that one of the other episodes may be devoted to an electric model.
Evidence for this theory comes to us through proprietary vehicle identification numbers that Ducati has filed with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The VIN decoder, submitted last September, listed models from 2017 to 2022, including various project code names.
Some of these code names represented models introduced by Ducati in its first round of world premieres, such as the Streetfighter V2, which was not listed by trade name in the VIN decoder. Ducati projects are usually given four-digit numbers, but one name stands out here: the V20E project.
If the name sounds familiar to you, it’s because it resembles “V21L”, the code name given to Ducati MotoE Prototype racing electric motorcycle A track-only prototype doesn’t require a VIN, so it’s possible that the Project V20E codename is for a production electric street bike. Ducati has previously stated that the goal of its participation in MotoE is to “create, as soon as technology allows, a Ducati on-road electric vehicle that is sporty, light, exciting and able to satisfy all enthusiasts. ” The wording made it seem like a Ducati electric street bike is still a few years away, but the mention of a Project V20E in the VIN decoder suggests it might be coming sooner than we expected.
Ducati Motorcycle released the first photos of its V21L MotoE prototype on December 20, 2021.
We’ll find out more when the next episode of the Ducati World Premiere premieres on February 17, and in subsequent episodes on March 3 and 10.
