Ford Mondeo unveiled the new generation of its iconic car that will not be sold in the UK, Europe or the US, and will be for China only. Production of the current generation model will end in Europe in March and will not be replaced by a new model for these markets.
Ford Mondeo 2022
Designed by Ford’s China Design Center in Shanghai specifically for Chinese customers, it will be built by Changan Ford, likely alongside the new Evos SUV that has been rumored for some time to be the successor to the Mondeo.
The new Ford Mondeo is also likely to share the platform of the Evos model, drawing inspiration from the SUV’s design and sharing the same design language with a coupé-like roofline, with recessed door handles. It is 63mm longer and 23mm wider than the fourth-generation Mondeo, while the wheelbase has grown by 104mm, creating plenty of interior space, especially in the rear seats.
It has a grille at the front with chrome details, as the Chinese market likes to see, and a strip of LEDs that extends along the top edge of the hood and connects the two daytime running lights. Below that are the main headlights.
While the oval brand did not show off the interior of the new Mondeo, it is likely based on an interior architecture shared with Evos. This would mean that the better-equipped versions of the Mondeo will come with a 12.3-inch digital dashboard and separate touchscreen, which extends to 27 inches.
No details about the engine have been released, although leaked homologation documents from China’s Ministry of Industry and Technology suggest two engines are in the works: a 1.5-litre and a 2.0-litre engine, producing 238 horsepower.
