Google Car vs Regular Car
Google has amassed a lot of buzz in recent months with its Google Car unveiling. What makes the Google car special from normal cars is its ability to drive. Just give it the location you need to go to and it will take you there; taking turns at intersections and even stopping at red lights. In a normal car, the driver is responsible for every movement of the car; which can be a bad thing with drunk or incapacitated drivers. With the Google car, a program running on an advanced computer directs the car on what to do. It sees the environment through an array of cameras and laser range finders, while a GPS receiver and Google’s own mapping service provide the exact location of the vehicle and where it needs to go.
One of the main advantages that many people see with the Google car is fuel efficiency. Many experts will tell you that driving style can greatly increase fuel consumption with excessive acceleration and subsequent braking. Google car can calculate the optimal speed needed and keep it at that speed. Google car can also save you from some traffic tickets with its ability to maintain a constant speed. When the speed limit for the road you’re on is available, Google Car can stay within those limits at all times.
Google has tested its car extensively and has racked up thousands of miles with its fleet without any accidents. But still, Google’s car doesn’t have the ability of a human driver to react to different scenarios; cases like when a child chases a ball on the road and many others. Unlike the ordinary cars that hit the highways today, the Google car is just a concept car that gives us a glimpse of what lies ahead 10 or 20 years later. Google’s car is not for sale and the most optimistic estimate is 8 years. Aside from the technological hurdles facing Google’s car, there are also social and legal issues that may be more difficult to tackle.
