Opel History
When Adam Opel made the first sewing machines in a small family workshop in 1863, he had no idea what was in store for him. The business began to prosper and was soon transformed, adding new facilities.
The factory in Rüsselsheim changed its location in 1886 and then devoted itself to the production of bicycles. Through innate talent, perseverance and vision, Opel began to grow incessantly.
Of course, part of the garnered fame was due to the involvement of Adam’s children, as they were cyclists. The brand became the first bicycle manufacturer in the world.
In 1895, while automobile development promised a new mode of transportation, the bicycle market was broken.
At that time, there was a global crisis due to overproduction, which forced Opel to look to another sector.
Priedrich Lutzman, a manufacturer of horses and carriages, designed a sophisticated vehicle that entered a race in Berlin in 1897.
Such was the success that the Opel brothers negotiated with Lutzmann to acquire their facilities and patented their brand. After several attempts, failures and successes, the first Opel vehicle, the 10/12 PS, appeared in 1902.
The 10/12 nomenclature refers to the size of the displacement, which had a 100mm bore and 120mm stroke. Its top speed was 45 km/h, but it marked a new era in the car market.
It had a two-cylinder engine in the front, an articulated shaft transmission. Production then continued with a range of new models, with an emphasis on the 20/24 and 35/40 PS, both 4-cylinder.
As of now, Opel has achieved several triumphs in the car market, new models and high sales volumes.
